About Refuge Remedies

Refuge Remedies was born out of genuine amazement.

As a nurse, I believe deeply in Western medicine because I have seen firsthand how powerful and necessary it can be. But over time, I became equally amazed by something else—the plants, herbs, and mushrooms that exist all around us, and what they have been traditionally known to contribute to human health.

The more I learned, the more I realized how disconnected many of us have become from the natural world God gave us. These plants didn’t suddenly become valuable because of trends or social media. They’ve been here all along—quietly growing, waiting to be noticed, studied, and respected.

Refuge Remedies exists at the meeting place of clinical knowledge and natural wisdom. Not to replace medicine, and not to tell anyone what they should do—but to share what exists, to educate with transparency, and to allow people to make informed decisions about their own health.

A Philosophy Rooted in Respect and Discovery

I believe the body was designed with incredible complexity and intelligence, and that God provided the natural world with tools that can support that design when used wisely and with intention. Herbal remedies have been used across cultures for generations, and when prepared carefully and responsibly, they can be a meaningful part of a wellness-focused lifestyle.

Refuge Remedies is grounded in respect—for science, for tradition, and for the individual. This is not about choosing one approach over another. It’s about understanding what’s available and deciding what aligns with your own health journey.

Thoughtful, Small-Batch Herbal Formulas

Refuge Remedies offers small-batch herbal tinctures and formulas made with quality ingredients, intentional sourcing, and close attention to detail. Each blend is created with transparency and care, grounded in traditional use and supported by thoughtful preparation.

This is not about extremes or hype. It’s about sharing knowledge, honoring the plants themselves, and offering products made with integrity.

Foraging, Learning, and the Call Back to Nature

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been learning to forage and connect directly with the plants themselves. Spending time in the woods has become an education of its own—inviting curiosity, attentiveness, and a deeper respect for the natural world. If you’ve never heard the terms grounding or forest bathing, I encourage you to explore them.

Our land is rich with mullein, a plant my husband noticed long before I understood its significance. When I finally began researching it—its long history of use and its traditional role in respiratory wellness—it deeply resonated, especially after what the world had just experienced.

From Oncology Nursing to Herbal Curiosity

That curiosity led me further. I came across a video by Paul Stamets sharing his mother’s experience with turkey tail mushrooms alongside cancer treatment. As an oncology nurse for over 16 years, this immediately caught my attention.

It brought back memories of learning about chemotherapy agents derived from tree bark and sea sponges—connections I hadn’t fully appreciated at the time, but which suddenly made sense. It wasn’t about replacing medicine, but about recognizing that nature and science have never been as separate as we sometimes believe.

Along the way, I discovered something unexpected: peace. I was never particularly “outdoorsy,” but walking, exploring, and learning in the forest changed everything for me.

Why Refuge Remedies Exists

The more I researched, the more I fell in love with the entire process—learning, investigating, experimenting, foraging, and creating tinctures and salves with intention and care.

After several years, I realized I had more tinctures than my family could ever use. I kept thinking—why keep this to myself? These plants and mushrooms have so much history and potential to support wellness, and people deserve to know what exists so they can make informed choices for themselves.

As a nurse, people naturally seek guidance, and I found myself sharing these remedies with those who were open to learning. You have my promise: I will never offer a product that I would not confidently give to my own family or use myself. I believe deeply in what I create, and that belief is the reason Refuge Remedies exists.

A Little About Home

My husband and I were born and raised in Mississippi and now live on our land in Sparta, Missouri with our six dogs and one cat (yes—six!). They often join me while foraging and make frequent appearances in my field photos. We have two wonderful grown children who live nearby and are joyfully awaiting our first grandbaby.
